1 Samuel 18:1-4
1 After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.
2 From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house.
3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
1 Samuel 20:4
Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.”
1 Samuel 20:16-17
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May the LORD call David's enemies to account."
17 And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.
If a movie is taken today based on the friendship of David & Jonathan, this will win many
Oscars. This is not a movie & this happened in real life.
Jonathan being the King's son sadsdwas in next in line to be the King. But his heart for
David the one who was anointed to be the next king was simply amazing.
Some of the statements that described their friendship.
Jonathan loved David as his own Soul.
Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor,
and even his sword and his bow and his belt. In fact Jonathan stripped himself of the
Kingdom & gave it to David.
1 Samuel 20:33
But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David.
So Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death. And Jonathan
rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he
was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.
1 Samuel 20:41-42
41 David rose from beside the stone heap and fell on his face to
the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed one another and wept with
one another, David weeping the most.
42 Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace,
because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, “The Lord
shall be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring,
forever.’”
Jonathan inspires all of us to be a Selfless friend who looked out for the well-being of
David.
He wanted to make sure that David was safe under his father. When he came to know
about his father's evil intentions his heart grieved for him. Truly Jonathan convicts us &
he calls us higher.
